Personal Statement

Scale plays an important part when I am making a piece of work.  I want my work to stand out and be noticed when it is placed on the body and in some cases remain a sculptural work of art when taken away from the body depending on the context of the specific piece.  I am interested in the area between fine art and the applied arts and the limitations involved in making jewellery in terms of wearability.  For this reason the way in which work is presented is very significant and helps the viewer understand how it would work away from the body.

I look to the natural world for inspiration when making pieces of jewellery whether it be plants and flowers or the elements.  The organic shapes and forms that I find through drawings and photographs are then manipulated by changing the scale or fragmenting the objects to create new and interesting images which are then translated into three dimensional objects.  The focus of my work is mainly concerned with form and shape. Making jewellery that consists of a number of similar components plays an important part in my work having used casting and photo-etching to achieve this.

Experimenting with the combination of traditional jewellery materials with less traditional materials such as fabric or plastic is something that I aim to continually investigate.  The combination of precious materials with non-precious materials creates an interesting dialogue as they oppose each other in terms of cost and tradition yet seem to compliment each other aesthetically.

Interaction between the jewellery and the wearer has become a common theme in my most recent work.  Each piece requires to either be touched or moved around, exciting the senses, making them all playful objects in different ways.  This means that each item of jewellery is completely unique with each presenting different ways in which it will be worn and work with the body.
